At Austen Hunter Photography, capturing the essence of military service is a profound honor. Recently, I had the privilege of photographing Justin, a Sergeant in the US Army Reserve, who wanted a memorable portrait in the recently rolled-out, 1940s-inspired US Army Green Service Uniform. His commitment to preserving his service memories brought him and his family on a 7-hour journey to my Pensacola studio.
Session Experience
Justin is nearing the end of his service commitment and wanted a timeless portrait to cherish as a family heirloom. The session, held at the Austen Hunter Photography studio in late June, was special because his family was there to support him. Their presence added warmth and joy to the session, especially when his 3-year-old smiled for the camera when we did family portraits towards the end.
Capturing the US Army Portrait
The nostalgic look of Justin's US Army service dress, inspired by the 1940s Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU), added a unique and stylish touch to the session. The AGSU, often referred to as "pinks and greens," was originally worn during World War II and is iconic for its classic and distinguished appearance. Reintroduced in recent years, the AGSU pays homage to the heritage and traditions of the Army, symbolizing honor and pride.
"Ensuring the uniform’s details are perfectly represented is crucial in capturing the pride and essence of military service." - Austen Hunter
The modern AGSU maintains the historical design while incorporating contemporary materials and craftsmanship, making it both a tribute to the past and a functional uniform for today’s soldiers. Capturing Justin in this uniform was a testament to the expertise required to photograph military portraits properly, ensuring every detail was perfect and every moment preserved with authenticity.

Working with veterans and service members is always a special experience for me. As a former Air Force officer, I deeply understand the pride and dedication that comes with military service. I strive to capture that essence in every portrait, creating timeless images that honor their commitment and sacrifice. Here’s what Justin had to say about his session:
